Getting a new business electric/gas connection, meter and/or supply

Our instant online prices are based on meters that have been supplied and have usage records for at least a few months. Unfortunately when you need a new supply or meter, suppliers generally build 'risk' into the prices they offer. This is because they dont have a 'track record' on which to base their prices on.

This is often because UK suppliers have to pay 'take or pay' penalties to National Grid Transco if they are not accurate enough in predicting how much gas or electricity their customer base will use (so the national supply network remains 'balanced'). It's also because electricity is expensive to produce at peak times ( for example 4pm-7pm in the winter months ) and less expensive for off peak use ( for example weekends and night time ).

Without knowing exactly how and when you will use the most power, suppliers will build in a margin of error into prices to cope with this 'unknown'.

For that reason our instant prices are not for 'new supplies' however we've compiled some contact numbers and links to major suppliers who can quote and cope with installing metering, wiring and pipework directly.

We recommend you ask for a rolling tariff or a maximum initial contract of one year and get at least 3 quotes. If you are offered a 'smart meter' as part of the installation please check with your supplier that the smart meter is capable of being read by ALL competitive suppliers in the future in case you switch ( at the time of writing there is not a 'national standard' for smart meters meaning some can't be read by some suppliers, thereby curtailing your future choices of other suppliers).

Once you have your first few bills from whoever you choose, showing actual usage and your gas Meter Point Reference number or electricity MPAN ( Meter Point Administration number ) also known as S Number or Supply Number, you'll be able to return to powerswitch.com and get instant prices which should be lower than you'll pay initially.

Good luck and we hope you'll return to us for better pricing soon!
